The Great Wall of China was originally built as a grouping of separate walls for defensive fortification to separate different states at war. It was built during the 7th and 8th Centuries B.C. during the Qin, Han and Ming Dynasties. It became the "Great" wall during the reign of Emperor Qin Shihuang to fend off invasion by the Northern Huns, following the unification of China. Most of what remains today are sections built during the Ming Dynasty.
