Mount Rushmore Bookends
This world famous granite sculpture, located on the Northeast edge of Harney Peak Granite Batholith. The sculptor used dynamite in an innovative and unprecedented way to remove large amounts of rock quickly and inexpensively. 450,000 tons of granite were removed, 90% was blasted by dynamite. A total of 400 stone workers blasted granite along side the sculptor, with no deaths and only two reported injuries.
Construction began in 1927, and was completed in 1941 by the son of the original sculptor. Only 6 of the 14 years were actual production/sculpting years.
The Presidents featured on Mount Rushmore are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The face height of the sculpture is 60 feet from chin to forehead. The width of the eyes is 11 feet each. The elevation of the sculpture is 5,725 feet.
Each set comes with 2 bookends. They are made of resin with an antiqued finish.
